The Trump administration has ordered an immediate freeze on federal grants, loans, and financial assistance programs.

Some shit you should know before you read: If you didn’t know, the US government provides grants, loans, and financial assistance programs to support a wide variety of recipients, including state and local governments, nonprofits, educational institutions, small businesses, and individuals. Federal grants, such as those provided through the Department of Education or the Department of Health and Human Services, fund public programs like education, healthcare, housing, disaster relief, and scientific research, while federal loan programs include student loans (e.g., Federal Direct Loans), small business loans through the Small Business Administration (SBA), and housing loans for low-income individuals via agencies like HUD. Supporters argue that these programs are essential for addressing social inequality and driving economic growth, particularly in underserved communities. Critics say that some programs are inefficient, prone to waste and corruption, or are overly bureaucratic.

What’s going on now: In a memo issued by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), the Trump administration ordered an immediate freeze on all federal financial assistance programs, including grants, loans, and disbursements, effective by 5PM today. The memo directs federal agencies to “temporarily pause all activities related to obligation or disbursement of all Federal financial assistance” and conduct a review to ensure compliance with President Trump’s executive orders. These orders specifically target initiatives tied to “DEI, woke gender ideology, and the Green New Deal,” with the administration arguing that such programs represent a misuse of taxpayer funds.

Acting OMB Director Matthew Vaeth stated, “The use of Federal resources to advance Marxist equity, transgenderism, and Green New Deal social engineering policies is a waste of taxpayer dollars that does not improve the day-to-day lives of those we serve.”

The freeze will impact a wide range of federal programs, including Pell Grants for students, school meal programs for low-income children, housing assistance, healthcare research, wildfire preparedness, and initiatives such as Head Start and WIC (Women, Infants, and Children). Nonprofit organizations, universities, small businesses, and state and local governments are among the groups most affected, as grants already awarded but not yet spent are subject to the halt.

While Social Security, Medicare, food stamps, and direct payments to individuals are exempt, critics warn that the freeze could disrupt vital services, with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer calling it “a dagger at the heart of the average American family.” Despite the criticism, the administration says the pause is necessary to “get control” of federal spending and prevent funds from advancing progressive agendas.

This all comes as New York Attorney General Letitia James announced her intention to file legal action against the Trump administration, calling the funding freeze “unconstitutional” and a violation of the 1974 Impoundment Control Act, which prohibits the executive branch from withholding funds appropriated by Congress.
