A Chinese court has sentenced a man to death after killing 35 people by driving into a crowd at a sports center last month.

Some shit you should know before you read: Back on November 12, 62-year-old Fan Weiqiu drove his car into a crowd of people exercising at a sports center in Zhuhai, China. The incident resulted in 35 deaths and 43 injuries. Fan’s actions were reportedly motivated by anger over his divorce settlement. This event became one of the deadliest vehicular attacks in recent Chinese history.

What’s going on now: This week, a Chinese criminal court in Zhuhai sentenced Weiqiu to death for driving his car into a crowd. During the proceedings, the court described Fan’s actions as having adespicable criminal motive,noting that the nature of the crime wasextremely vile,withparticularly cruel meansandsevere consequences.Fan pleaded guilty to charges of endangering public safety through dangerous means.

Notably, President Xi Jinping issued a rare condemnation of Weiqiu’s actions, noting that his actions attempted to create rifts in social stability. Xi also used the incident to call on local governments to address personal disputes that could escalate into violence, including disputes stemming from marital or financial issues.

This all comes as China has dealt with an uptick of recent vehicle attacks that have raised concerns about public safety. Just days before the Zhuhai incident, a man in Changde City drove his car into a crowd near a school, injuring 30 people, including 18 children.
