China has confirmed that they executed two men for carrying out deadly attacks in November 2024, which collectively killed dozens of people.
Some shit you should know before you read: Back in November, China had two major attacks that left dozens dead and many others injured. In the southern city of Zhuhai, a vehicle was deliberately driven into a crowd outside a stadium, killing at least 35 people and injuring over 40 in what became the country’s deadliest attack in more than a decade. Just days later, in the eastern city of Wuxi, a stabbing spree at a vocational school claimed the lives of eight people and injured 17 others. Both incidents were reportedly motivated by personal grievances and were not connected.

What’s going on now: In an announcement, China’s criminal justice system confirmed the execution of Fan Weiqu, 62, and Xu Jiajin, 21, for their involvement in the deadly attacks back in November. According to authorities, Fan carried out his attack in Zhuhai out of anger over an unfavorable divorce settlement. In addition, Xu, who was a vocational school student in Wuxi, was motivated by frustration after failing his exams and dissatisfaction with his internship pay.
This all comes as China remains the world’s leading executioner, though the exact number of executions is classified as a state secret. While individuals sentenced to death in China are allowed to appeal, the process is often expedited, particularly in cases deemed especially severe or “socially disruptive,” as seen with these attacks. Traditionally, executions in China are carried out by firing squad.
Notably, Chinese officials did not confirm how both men were killed.
