What’s the deal: The incident unfolded around 7:45 PM local time on Monday when a driver drove his off-road vehicle into a group of people exercising in Zhuhai, China. Police found numerous victims scattered on the ground, some seriously injured and many dead. Chinese officials report that, in addition to the 35 killed, another 43 are injured. Footage we’ve obtained shows bloodied victims on the ground as onlookers and first responders rush to assist.
The motive: Authorities identified the driver as a 62-year-old man with the last name “Fan. ” He was reportedly motivated by personal grievances stemming from a recent divorce. Initial investigations indicate that Fan was dissatisfied with the division of property between him and his ex-wife, which he saw as unjust.
After the incident, Fan attempted to kill himself with a knife, with authorities saying there were severe injuries to his neck, wrists, and chest. He is currently in a coma and remains under close medical supervision, which authorities say has delayed police efforts to interrogate him.
President reacts: In a brief statement, Chinese President Xi Jinping called for Fan to be “severely punished in accordance with the law.” According to state media outlet Xinhua, “Xi [also] urged all localities and relevant authorities to draw lessons from the case, and to strengthen their prevention and control of risks at the source.”
