The wife of Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ), Nadine Arslanian, has been excused from her upcoming court appearance following her recent cancer treatment in her bribery case.
Nadine Arslanian’s trial has faced delays due to her breast cancer diagnosis. Initially set for last month, the trial has been rescheduled for July. Her attorneys requested she be absent from the upcoming pretrial hearing, citing “intense, chronic” pain from her recent surgery, a request Judge Sidney Stein granted on Thursday.
Both Senator Menendez and his wife have pleaded not guilty to charges of accepting bribes worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, including gold bars and luxury cars, from foreign interests to leverage his Senate influence. Their trials are being conducted separately, with the senator’s trial already underway. Prosecutors accuse Menendez of prioritizing greed by participating in a “quid pro quo” scheme with Egyptian business interests.
Senator Menendez’s prior corruption charges in 2015 were dropped in 2018 after a jury failed to reach a verdict. His current trial is expected to continue for another three to five weeks. Recently, Menendez filed for reelection as an independent, while Rep. Andy Kim (D-NJ) secured the Democratic nomination for his seat.
