The wife of Senator Bob Menendez, Nadine, has officially requested that her criminal trial be delayed next month due to a “serious medical condition.”
Nadine Menendez’s legal representatives reached out to US District Judge Sidney Stein, requesting a postponement of the trial scheduled to begin on May 6. The couple and two New Jersey businessmen face charges related to engaging in various bribery and corruption schemes.

In a letter to Judge Stein, Nadine Menendez’s attorneys said that she was diagnosed with a severe health condition necessitating surgery within the next four to six weeks. This medical situation would also involve extensive follow-up and recovery, significantly impacting her ability to collaborate with her legal team in the immediate weeks and impair her capability to endure the trial both physically and mentally. The letter further indicated uncertainty regarding the full scope of the medical treatment required.
The legal team proposed a status hearing to be scheduled eight weeks later, allowing Nadine Menendez to update the court on her health status and outline a possible new timeline for the trial. Both Nadine Menendez and her husband, along with their co-accused, have pleaded not guilty to the allegations against them. The charges suggest that Senator Menendez consented to receive substantial bribes in various forms, aiming to benefit the implicated businessmen and the Egyptian government.
Nadine Menendez faces a total of 15 counts, and Senator Menendez faces 16 counts, stemming from accusations of accepting over $600,000 in bribes, including cash, gold bars, a luxury vehicle, and a mortgage for their home. Additionally, this March, the couple pleaded not guilty to new charges of obstructing justice during the investigation.
