Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has joined over 30 Democratic members of the US House of Representatives in urging a complete end of weapon transfers to Israel.
In their letter addressed to President Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken, the lawmakers said, “In light of the recent strike against aid workers and the ever-worsening humanitarian crisis, we believe it is unjustifiable to approve these weapons transfers.” In addition, the group of democrats called on the Biden administration to launch an independent investigation into the strike that killed the aid workers.
The lawmakers also raised concerns about the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, saying, “While we appreciate your administration’s recent efforts to increase the delivery of desperately needed humanitarian aid to Gaza, these efforts will not be sufficient to meet the extraordinary need on the ground. Over 200 aid workers have been killed since the start of the war. These attacks and deaths are having a chilling effect with the World Central Kitchen and other humanitarian groups now suspending their operations in Gaza.”
This all comes as the Israeli military’s internal investigation has led to the dismissal of two officers and reprimands for senior commanders who did not follow procedures.
