The White House has raised significant concerns over Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s strategy to invade the Gaza city of Rafah, an area where over one million civilians are currently residing.
Netanyahu, in a statement on CBS’s “Face the Nation,” declared the necessity of the operation, saying, “going into Rafah has to be done,” and anticipated a “total victory” against Hamas within weeks. Despite his assurance of alignment with the United States on the operation, there have been contrasting remarks from those within the Biden administration.

In an NBC’s “Meet the Press” interview, National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan contradicted Netanyahu’s claims of shared plans with the US, explicitly stating that President Biden “has not” seen Israel’s plans for Rafah. Sullivan emphasized the US stance against a major military operation in Rafah without a “clear and executable plan to protect those civilians, to get them to safety and to feed, clothe and house them.”
Further complicating matters, Sullivan revealed on CNN’s “State of the Union” that the US has yet to see Netanyahu’s plans for a post-war Gaza, which reportedly involves Israel retaining indefinite security control over a demilitarized Gaza.
This comes as various news outlets citing anonymous sources have reported that there are significant differences between President Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s view of the war in Gaza. The alleged rift has also resulted in Biden and Netanyahu not speaking for weeks.
