The United States is actively engaging with at least 12 countries to enhance a naval task force, Combined Task Force 153 (CTF-153), which aims to ensure the safe passage of commercial vessels in and around the Red Sea.
This initiative seeks to expand the capabilities of CTF-153, currently based in Bahrain and comprised of 39 member nations, by additional contributions from at least 12 member nations involved in the discussions. The specifics of the nations involved in these negotiations remain undisclosed, with an anonymous US official not providing further details to Al Arabiya English.
This effort comes amidst heightened tensions in the region, following missile and projectile attacks by the Iran-backed Houthis on commercial cargo ships since the Hamas attack on October 7. Additionally, US warships in the Middle East have encountered close encounters with missiles launched by Iran-backed groups.
Recently, the US military reported a Houthi attack on the Motor Tanker STRINDA in the Red Sea, using an anti-ship cruise missile. The Houthis claimed responsibility, claiming they targeted the tanker for allegedly delivering oil to Israel, a claim refuted by the Norwegian owners, who stated the tanker was bound for Italy. The USS Mason responded to the tanker’s call but departed after confirming no assistance was required.
US Special Envoy for Yemen, Tim Lenderking, visited the Gulf to discuss the escalating situation with the Houthis, emphasizing US efforts in diplomacy and regional coordination for maritime security in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin has also been discussing the Houthi threat to maritime freedom in the Red Sea with regional leaders. In conversations with Saudi Arabia’s Defense Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman and Israel’s Defense Minister, Austin condemned Houthi aggression and underscored Iran’s role in supporting the group. He also emphasized the US’s commitment to working with partners to ensure the safe passage of global shipping, highlighting the importance of a maritime task force in maintaining security and commerce in the region.
