President Trump said Chinese President Xi Jinping pledged not to supply Iran with military equipment during their meeting on Thursday.

Some shit you should know before you dig in: In a recent interview with CBS, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that China had given Iran “a certain amount of support” including missile components, and the New York Times reported this week that US officials believe Chinese firms have weighed selling arms to Iran by routing them through intermediary countries. Separately, US special forces raided a Chinese vessel in the Indian Ocean that was carrying military and dual-use components from China to Iran. That raid resulted in US forces seizing some of the cargo, and President Trump later said he had seen some evidence that China had attempted to supply something to Iran.

What’s going on now: Trump made the comments during an interview with Sean Hannity of Fox News, recounting his face-to-face meeting with Xi in Beijing. “He said he’s not going to give military equipment. That’s a big statement. He said that today,” Trump told Hannity.

Still, China has continued to deny providing military equipment to Iran. Zhang Xiaogang, a spokesperson for China’s Ministry of National Defense, said, “We have responded to such questions many times, and we oppose the spread of false information.”

According to Trump, Xi also volunteered to help end the war, though he told Trump that China wanted to keep buying Iranian oil. Per the White House readout, both sides agreed the Strait of Hormuz must stay open, Xi opposed any Iranian tolling system, and both leaders agreed Iran can never have a nuclear weapon. China’s own readout of the meeting didn’t mention Iran or the Strait at all.
