Let’s bring you up to speed: Earlier this year, Russia entered a defense pact with North Korea, which committed both nations to provide “mutual assistance” in the event of an attack on either side. While the defense pact was approved by Russia’s lower house, it still needs final approval from the upper house to take full effect. This comes as roughly 3,000 North Korean troops are in Russia and undergoing combat training with the likelihood that they’ll be deployed to Ukraine.
What’s the deal: During an interview with NBC’s Meet the Press, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer defended President Biden’s mental acuity and leadership record amid growing criticism. Responding to allegations that Democrats misled the public about Biden’s cognitive health, Schumer insisted, “Look, we didn’t. Let’s look at President Biden—he’s had an amazing record. The legislation we passed, one of the most significant groups of legislation since the New Deal, since Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society, putting in 235 judges—a record. And he’s a – he’s a patriot. He’s a great guy. And when he stepped down, he did it on his own because he thought it was better, not only for the Democratic Party, but for America. We should all salute him. We should all salute him.“ He also characterized the accusations as partisan propaganda and dismissed claims of decline as “wrong.”
Schumer added, “When he stepped down, he did it on his own because he thought it was better, not only for the Democratic Party, but for America,” Schumer said. “We should all salute him. We should all salute him.”
This all comes amid significant infighting within the Democratic Party following the recent election loss. Critics argue that President Biden should have withdrawn from the race earlier, allowing for a more open primary process to select a candidate. Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi attributed the defeat to Biden’s delayed exit and the absence of a competitive primary.
