CBS News has announced that during tonight’s vice presidential debate, fact-checking will be handled through their website rather than by the debate moderators.

What’s the deal: According to CBS, they will fact-check the vice-presidential debate by displaying a QR code on screen that directs viewers to a live blog on CBSNews.com, where real-time fact-checking of the candidates’ statements will be available. Instead of having the moderators perform fact-checks during the debate, CBS is opting to provide this service online.

What CBS is saying: In a statement to the New York Times, Claudia Milne, senior vice president of CBS said, “The goal of the debate is to facilitate a good debate between the candidates, and the moderators will give them the opportunity to fact-check each other in real time.”

Notable shift: This development contrasts with previous debate formats, such as ABC’s debate, where fact-checking was conducted live on air, leading to criticism from Donald Trump and his supporters.
