Reactions from the candidates:
Senator Vance: In a statement, Senator Vance said, “The American people deserve as many debates as possible, which is why President Trump has challenged Kamala to three of them already. Not only do I accept the CBS debate on October 1st, I accept the CNN debate on September 18th as well. I look forward to seeing you at both!”

Governor Walz: In a brief statement, Governor Walz said, “See you on October 1, JD.”

Digging Deeper: The announcement of the vice presidential debate follows President Biden’s unexpected withdrawal from the presidential race, which caused significant shifts in the debate schedule and the Democratic ticket. CBS initially planned to hold the debate in late July or early August, but these dates were scrapped. In response, Senator JD Vance has pushed for more debates, including a CNN debate on September 18. However, Governor Walz has yet to agree to a second debate.
