Newsmax has settled a defamation lawsuit with voting systems provider Smartmatic over claims about its software following the 2020 election.

Let’s bring you up to speed: Following the 2020 election, Smartmatic, a technology company that’s used in the US voting system, sued multiple conservative media outlets, including Newsmax and Fox News over false claims that its software was involved in rigging the election in favor of President Biden. The lawsuits alleged that these networks knowingly spread allegations of voter fraud to boost ratings and cater to supporters of former President Donald Trump. Smartmatic argued that this severely damaged its reputation and business.

What Newsmax is saying: In a brief statement on their website, Newsmax said they were “pleased to announce it has resolved the litigation brought by Smartmatic through a confidential settlement.” It’s unclear how much Newsmax paid to settle the lawsuit.

Not over yet: Despite settling its lawsuit with Smartmatic, Newsmax is still embroiled in ongoing litigation with Dominion Voting Systems. Dominion has accused the network of defamation for broadcasting claims that its voting machines were used to rig the 2020 U.S. presidential election.

Previous settlement with Fox: Fox News paid $787 million to settle a defamation lawsuit brought by Dominion Voting Systems, which accused the network of spreading false claims that Dominion’s voting machines were involved in rigging the 2020 US presidential election. The settlement, one of the largest in media defamation history, came just before the case was set to go to trial.
