Representative Cori Bush (D-MO), a member of the “Squad,” has lost her primary election.

What’s the deal: Rep. Cori Bush has lost her primary election to St. Louis County District Attorney Wesley Bell, who secured 51.2% of the vote compared to Bush’s 45.6%. She is now the second progressive “Squad” member to be defeated this cycle, following Rep. Jamaal Bowman. These losses have reduced the Squad’s presence in Congress from nine to seven members.

Cori Bush Primary Loss

What Bush said: Following her loss, Congresswoman Bush attributed it to the super PAC AIPAC, which spent millions to unseat her. In a statement, she said, “They’re about to see this other Cori, this other side. There is nothing that happens in my life that happens in vain. So, this happened because it was meant to happen. And let me say, it’s because of the work that I need to do. And let me say this: AIPAC, I’m coming to tear your kingdom down!”

AIPAC responds: In a statement, AIPAC said, “AIPAC and our 4.5 million grassroots members were proud to help progressive pro-Israel leader Wesley Bell defeat anti-Israel Squad member Rep. Cori Bush. Being pro-Israel is good policy and good politics!”

Squad member reacts: Following her loss, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio Cortez voiced concerns over AIPAC’s influence in Democratic primaries. She said, “I think that what we do need to have a real conversation about is how a Republican — primarily Republican and largely Republican-financed — organization is playing and dumping money and playing an extremely divisive role in the Democratic Party.”
