DNC Chair Jaime Harrison announced the Democratic Party’s intention to hold a “transparent and orderly process” to choose their 2024 nominee following President Biden’s decision to step aside.
DNC Announcement: DNC Chair Jaime Harrison said, “President Biden an enormous debt of gratitude for the unparalleled progress he has delivered over the last four years. The work that we must do now, while unprecedented, is clear. In the coming days, the Party will undertake a transparent and orderly process to move forward as a united Democratic Party with a candidate who can defeat Donald Trump in November. This process will be governed by established rules and procedures of the Party. Our delegates are prepared to take seriously their responsibility in swiftly delivering a candidate to the American people.”
Upcoming Democratic National Convention: The Democratic convention is set to take place in Chicago next month. Initially, the DNC had planned to conduct a virtual roll call to nominate Biden. Today, top DNC officials are meeting to discuss changes to that virtual roll call.
Nomination Process: Biden had 3,850 pledged delegates, who can now choose any candidate since he is out of the race. Democratic candidates will need at least 300 delegates’ signatures to be considered. To secure the party’s nomination, a candidate must initially receive a majority vote from the pledged delegates. If no clear majority is reached, superdelegates, including party leaders and lawmakers, will vote in subsequent rounds until a nominee is chosen.
Endorsements for Kamala Harris: Following Biden’s announcement that he would step down, multiple high-profile democrats announced they would support Kamala Harris to take on Donald Trump in the upcoming election. These individuals include: President Biden, Former President Bill Clinton, Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Sen. Alex Padilla, Sen. Patty Murray, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Sen.
