Vice President Kamala Harris has secured the Democratic presidential nomination in a virtual roll call vote, becoming the presumptive nominee.

What’s the deal: Vice President Kamala Harris secured 3,923 delegates, surpassing the 2,350 votes needed to become the Democratic presidential nominee. The Democratic National Committee (DNC) held a virtual roll call vote, which began on Thursday and allowed delegates to cast their votes online rather than in person due to logistical considerations. A virtual roll call is a digital process where delegates from each state submit their votes electronically, ensuring that the nomination process can proceed smoothly. This method was initially planned to ensure President Biden’s name appeared on the ballot in Ohio by a set deadline, which has since been extended.

What Harris said: In a statement after securing the nomination, Vice President Harris said, “I am honored to be the Democratic nominee for President of the United States. I will officially accept the nomination next week. This campaign is about people coming together, fueled by love of country, to fight for the best of who we are.”

Statement from DNC: The Chairman of the DNC, Jamie Harris, said, “As chair of this great party, as chair of this party that is built on hope, I am so proud to confirm that Vice President Harris has earned more than a majority of votes from all convention delegates and will be the nominee of the democratic party following the close of voting on Monday. Just one day after we opened voting that the vice president has crossed the majority threshold and will officially be our nominee next week, folks that is outstanding.”
