The Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee has described the shooting at former President Trump’s Pennsylvania rally as a significant “security failure.”
Rep. Mike Turner (R-Ohio) expressed his shock on CNN’s State of the Union, questioning, “How is it that someone could get on a roof with a superior position, with a weapon, and attempt to assassinate former President Donald Trump?” He added, “It’s just unthinkable, unfathomable.” Despite the severity of the incident, Turner revealed that members of the House Intelligence Committee had not yet been briefed on the matter.

In response to the incident, Congressional members are investigating security arrangements at the rally. The House Oversight Committee, led by Rep. James Comer (R-KY), has demanded that Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle testify on Monday. Additionally, Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA) has pledged a comprehensive Congressional investigation to uncover the details of the security breach.

The FBI has reported that the gunman, identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, fired from a rooftop, resulting in one person dying and two people being critically injured. Former President Trump said that one of the bullets grazed his ear. Witnesses claimed they saw Crooks scaling the building and attempted to alert law enforcement, who reportedly did not respond in time to prevent the shooting.
