Melania’s words: In the video, Melania says, “The attempt on my husband’s life was a horrible distressing experience. Now, the silence around it feels heavy. I can’t help but wonder why didn’t law enforcement officials arrest the shooter before the speech. There is definitely more to the story, and we need to uncover the truth.”
Some background on the shooting: The assassination attempt on Donald Trump was carried out by Thomas Crooks during a campaign rally in Butler Township, Pennsylvania, in July. Crooks, positioned on a rooftop, fired shots, injuring Trump with a bullet to the ear and killing fire chief Corey Comperatore. In addition, two others were wounded before a Secret Service sniper killed Crooks. Despite his suspicious behavior and possession of a range finder, law enforcement did not detain Crooks before the attack.
Where the investigation stands: While a bipartisan House task force was established to investigate these security failures, there have been no significant breakthroughs or new findings in recent months. According to the FBI, Crooks utilized encrypted messaging and showed interest in attending both Trump and Biden rallies.
