Despite some governors publicly supporting President Biden’s continued re-election campaign, Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey has called on him to “carefully evaluate” his candidacy as concerns about his ability to win the election persist.
In a statement, Governor Healey said, “I know he agrees this is the most important election of our lifetimes. Over the coming days, I urge him to listen to the American people and carefully evaluate whether he remains our best hope to defeat Donald Trump. Whatever President Biden decides, I am committed to doing everything in my power to defeat Donald Trump.”
Healey’s stance was notably less enthusiastic than the strong endorsements from Democratic governors like Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan, Governor Wes Moore of Maryland, and Gavin Newsom of California. These governors met with President Biden earlier this week following his poor debate performance, which some Democrats argue killed his re-election chances.
Despite this, President Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and the DNC vowed to continue. Earlier today, while departing for Wisconsin, President Biden called out his critics calling on him to drop out, saying, “Guess what? They’re trying to push me out of the race. Let me say this as clearly as I can. I’m staying in the race. I’ll beat Donald Trump.”
