The White House has confirmed that President Biden will hold a series of meetings with Democratic congressional leaders and governors on Wednesday amid widespread concerns over his debate performance.
On Tuesday, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre announced that President Biden intends to meet with key Democratic figures, including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), later this week. The White House also confirmed that senior staff members and the campaign have maintained regular communication with lawmakers.
Notably, CNN reported that Democratic governors had a conference call on Monday without Biden’s direct participation. This call, organized by Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D), chair of the Democratic Governors Association, involved only the governors. According to a national Democratic official, the Biden-Harris team was informed about the meeting. The official noted, “Democratic governors are some of the President and Vice President’s most proactive and vocal supporters because they’ve seen how the Biden-Harris Administration’s accomplishments are directly benefiting their residents.”
This comes as recent polls have indicated a drop in confidence among Democratic voters. A CNN poll released on Tuesday revealed that former President Donald Trump had a +6 lead over President Biden in the General Election. Another poll by USA Today showed Trump leading Biden by +3.
Despite some critical internal discussions, Democratic governors have publicly supported Biden, acknowledging the challenging debate performance but stressing the importance of his leadership over former President Trump.
