The Pentagon has heightened the state of alert for multiple US military bases in Europe amid concerns over potential terrorist attacks targeting US military personnel and/or facilities.
Multiple US military installations, including the US Army facility in Stuttgart, Germany, which houses US European Command (EUCOM) headquarters, have escalated their alert status to “Force Protection Condition Charlie.” Force Protection Condition Charlie indicates that an incident or intelligence has suggested a probable terrorist attack against personnel or facilities. This level is just below the highest threat level, Delta, which is used when an imminent attack occurs. This alert level has not been seen in at least a decade, indicating a serious and credible threat.

According to Stars and Stripes, similar alerts were also issued to other US bases in Germany, including Baumholder and Ramstein Air Base, as well as installations in Romania and Bulgaria. Additionally, Aviano Air Base in Italy and other US facilities in the region have also increased their security measures in response to the elevated threat level.
In a statement, EUCOM emphasized that a “variety of factors play into the safety of [the] US military community abroad.” This regular evaluation often leads to the implementation of additional protective measures, though specific details are not publicly disclosed for security reasons. Service members and their families have been advised to remain vigilant, report any suspicious activity, and follow the Department of State’s travel advisories.
This significant increase in security comes as a result of various ongoing events across Europe, including political elections, major sporting events like the upcoming Olympics, and ongoing conflicts in regions such as Ukraine and Gaza.
