The White House has announced a $900 million initiative aimed at revolutionizing school transportation.
The $900 million will be distributed to over 500 school districts across the United States for clean energy school buses. This significant investment, part of the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) 2023 Clean School Bus Program rebate competition, will replace diesel-fueled buses with cleaner alternatives.
The funding will facilitate the purchase of over 3,400 new clean school buses, with 92 percent being electric. This initiative aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and protect children’s health from pollution, as highlighted in the EPA’s announcement. The selected school districts span 47 states, Washington, D.C., and include several federally recognized tribes and U.S. territories.
In a statement, EPA Administrator Michael Regan said, “We are transforming the nation’s school bus fleet to better protect our most precious cargo—our kids—saving school districts money, improving air quality, and bolstering American manufacturing all at the same time.”
A significant portion of the funding is dedicated to supporting underserved communities. Nearly half of the funds will go to school districts in low-income, rural, and tribal areas.
