Ukraine has announced that they have uncovered two more mass burial sites containing the bodies of hundreds of people in the northeastern town of Izium.
In a statement, Ukrainian President Zelensky said, “Today I received more information… They found two more mass graves, big graves with hundreds of people… We’re talking about (the) little town of Izium.” In an interview with CNS, Zelensky added, “The sanctions [on Russia] need to continue. These sanctions will have political impact, as well as financial impact.”
Russia has not responded to requests for comment about the additional burial sites found. Previously, Russia has accused Ukraine of creating the burial sites and killing its own people.
This development comes shortly after a large burial site uncovered 436 bodies in Izium earlier this month. Investigators say that most of the recovered bodies showed signs of a violent death. In addition, roughly 30 bodies recovered had preliminary signs of being tortured.
