Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has vowed to hit back at Russia after a cruise missile flattened an apartment building and killed 24 people on Thursday.
Getting into it: According to Ukrainian officials, a Russian Kh-101 cruise missile slammed into a nine-story apartment block in Kyiv’s Darnytskyi district, demolishing an entire entrance and destroying 18 apartments. Rescue crews dug for more than 28 hours, clearing roughly 3,000 cubic meters of debris and pulling 30 people out alive. The strike was part of a Russian aerial barrage that included 1,410 drones and 56 missiles in a single 24-hour period, which Ukraine’s air force called the largest aerial assault of the war.
Ukraine struck back overnight with a massive drone barrage on Russia. A strike on the city of Ryazan killed four people, including a child, and hit one of Russia’s largest oil refineries. Ukrainian officials (including Zelenskyy) vowed to intensify strikes within Russia in retaliation.
Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed its air defenses shot down 355 Ukrainian drones overnight in one of the biggest barrages of the war.
Zelenskyy said Ukrainian analysis of the wreckage showed the missile had been built in recent weeks, arguing it proves Russia is still evading sanctions on missile components. “This means Russia is still importing the components, resources and equipment necessary for missile production in circumvention of global sanctions,” Zelenskyy said. “Stopping Russia’s sanctions evasion schemes must be a genuine priority for all our partners.”
Trump, who has pushed to end the war and brokered the recent three-day truce, told reporters that Thursday’s strike could set back peace efforts.
“It’s one that we’d like to see settled. Until last night, it was looking good, but they [the Ukrainians] took a big hit last night. So it’s gonna happen [the end of the war]. But it’s a shame,” Trump said.
