First Lady Melania Trump has called for increased pre-emptive intervention and nationwide behavioral threat assessments following the deadly Minneapolis school shooting that left two children dead and 17 others injured.

Getting into it: In a statement released by her office late Wednesday night, First Lady Melania Trump called for the implementation of behavioral threat assessments across all levels of society, from families and schools to digital platforms.Early warning signs are often evident, with many individuals exhibiting concerning behaviors and making violent threats online prior to their actions, she stated, stressing that heightened awareness and swift action could save lives.

Melania’s stance differs from other influential lawmakers, including former Vice President Kamala Harris and some Democratic leaders, who have responded to the Minneapolis shooting by renewing calls for stricter gun control legislation. In a statement, Harris said, “Mayor Jacob Frey said it clearly: ‘Don’t just say this is about thoughts and prayers right now. These kids were literally praying. We know the solutions. Our leaders must have the courage to act to stop these tragedies.”

This all comes as new details continue to emerge about the shooter’s actions leading up to the deadly attack. Just hours before opening fire at the Annunciation Catholic Church during a morning Mass, the shooter uploaded a series of deeply troubling videos to YouTube. The videos, since removed by the platform, included footage of a handwritten manifesto, close-ups of weapons marked with hateful messages, and commentary from the shooter expressing admiration for past mass murderers and a desire to carry out an act of similar scale. The videos were filled with violent ramblings, demonic-like statements, and references to infamous mass shooters, including the perpetrator of the Sandy Hook Elementary massacre.

Phrases like “for the children,” “kill Donald Trump,” and “6 million wasn’t enough” were found painted on gun magazines, alongside praise for violent figures. Investigators are also analyzing the manifesto, much of which was written using a mix of English and Cyrillic characters, to determine the extent of the planning involved and any potential ideological influences.

Police also confirmed that a diagram of the church’s interior was discovered among the shooter’s belongings. The shooter, who was a former student of the school and whose mother once worked there, legally purchased the firearms used in the attack.

In interviews with local media, several people who knew the shooter described unsettling behavior dating back to their school years. Josefina Sanchez, a former classmate at Annunciation Catholic School, told KSTP, “Something I knew was off, but I was a kid—how would I know like what to do?” She recalled a particularly disturbing moment in seventh grade when the shooter raised a hand and said, “praise Hitler.” Sanchez added, “When you see something erratic, it doesn’t leave your mind… I wish I could have said something sooner, but I was little—how do I know?”

Neighbors of the shooter’s family also expressed shock, describing the household as quiet and kind. “They are a wonderful couple—a good part of this neighborhood,” said Terry Cole, who choked up while speaking to reporters. Another neighbor, Jim White, said, “They are very nice neighbors, very good people.”
