The US Government has announced a $5 million reward for information leading to the location and safe return of a dual US-Afghan citizen who disappeared in Kabul after reportedly being detained by the Taliban.
Getting into it: The reward, announced by the State Department’s Rewards for Justice program, confirmed it would offer up to $5 million for credible information leading to the location, recovery, and safe return of Mahmood Shah Habibi, an Afghan American businessman and former Afghan civil aviation chief who vanished in Kabul nearly three years ago.

There’s speculation that his detainment may be connected to suspicions from the Taliban following a 2022 US drone strike in Kabul that killed al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri. Some believe the Taliban may have suspected ACG of aiding in that strike, despite no evidence to support such claims.
State Department officials have also confirmed that multiple witnesses saw Habibi being taken into Taliban custody and that several former detainees reported seeing him at GDI facilities before they were released.
The State Department is encouraging anyone with information to reach out securely via Signal, Telegram, WhatsApp, or the agency’s web-based tip line.
