Texas Governor Greg Abbott has threatened to terminate all state funding to the city of San Marcos if its City Council proceeds with a proposed resolution supporting an arms embargo on Israel, the recognition of Palestinian sovereignty,
Some shit you should know before you read: If you’re unaware, on May 6th the San Marcos City Council is scheduled to vote on a proposed resolution that calls for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas conflict, recognition of Palestinian sovereignty, and an arms embargo on the State of Israel. The resolution also condemns the targeting of civilians by all parties and accuses Israel of genocide, apartheid, and the illegal occupation of Palestinian territories. The proposed resolution advocates redirecting approximately $4,434,675 in resident tax dollars that the city council members say has been sent to support Israel—specifically, its military efforts. The resolution does not provide a detailed accounting of how those funds are directly or indirectly tied to Israeli military support.

What’s going on now: In a letter addressed to San Marcos Mayor Jane Hughson, Texas Governor Greg Abbott warned that if the city adopts its proposed ceasefire resolution, the state will terminate all current grant agreements and refuse to enter into new ones. Abbott also said that the resolution appears to violate Texas law, specifically House Bill 89, which prohibits government entities from contracting with businesses that boycott Israel. “Anti-Israel policies are anti-Texas policies,”Abbott wrote, warning that Texas “will not tolerate antisemitism.”
He pointed to language in the resolution calling for a reallocation of funds away from Israel’s military as indicative of an attempt to sidestep the state’s legal requirements.
Abbott also reiterated his longstanding support for Israel, calling the nation “a stalwart ally of the United States and a friend to Texas,” and highlighted previous legislative actions he has taken to combat antisemitism.
As of now, the city has not commented on this development.
