The United States has officially secured the release of American teacher Marc Fogel, who was labeled wrongfully detained in Russia.

Some shit you should know before you read: Back in August of 2021, Marc Fogel, a Pennsylvania schoolteacher with a decade of teaching experience in Moscow, was arrested at Sheremetyevo Airport in Russia after customs officials found a small amount of medical marijuana—less than an ounce—in his luggage. Fogel claimed the marijuana was prescribed for chronic pain management, but Russian authorities charged him with drug smuggling, leading to a sentence of 14 years in a penal colony. Despite marijuana’s medical use being recognized in many countries, it is illegal in Russia, with the country having some of the strictest drug laws in the world.

What’s going on now: The White House confirmed that they had successfully secured the release of Marc Fogel from a Russian prison. National Security Adviser Mike Waltz stated that the deal was negotiated by President Donald Trump, Special Envoy for the Middle East Steve Witkoff, and senior advisers. While details of the exchange remain undisclosed, the administration described it as a “show of good faith” from Russia, signaling potential diplomatic progress.

In a statement, National Security Advisor Mike Waltz said, “Today, President Donald J. Trump and his Special Envoy Steve Witkoff are able to announce that Mr. Witkoff is leaving Russian airspace with Marc Fogel, an American who was detained by Russia. President Trump, Steve Witkoff and the President’s advisors negotiated an exchange that serves as a show of good faith from the Russians and a sign we are moving in the right direction to end the brutal and terrible war in Ukraine.”

Witkoff, who played a crucial role in securing the agreement, personally traveled to Russia to bring Fogel back to the United States. His involvement was unexpected, as he had no prior official dealings with Russia, but he leveraged his diplomatic ties in the Middle East—particularly in Qatar—to facilitate the negotiations. Qatari intermediaries reportedly assisted in brokering the deal, ultimately leading to Fogel’s release.

The nature of the exchange remains unclear, leaving open questions about whether it involved a direct prisoner swap or another form of diplomatic arrangement. Despite this, Trump officials stressed that securing Fogel’s freedom was a priority and a testament to the administration’s commitment to bringing wrongfully detained Americans home.
