The United States Senate has confirmed President Trump’s nominee for Attorney General, Pam Bondi.
Some shit you should know before you read: Pam Bondi is a former Florida Attorney General and longtime Republican official known for her tough-on-crime stance. Born in Tampa, Florida, she worked as a prosecutor before being elected as Florida’s first female Attorney General in 2010. During her tenure, she gained praise for her efforts in combating opioid abuse, human trafficking, and fraud but also faced criticism for her handling of consumer protection cases, including allegations of political favoritism after her office declined to investigate Trump University following a $25,000 donation from Trump’s foundation to her PAC. Bondi later became a vocal Trump ally, serving as a legal advocate during his 2020 election challenges and drawing further scrutiny for her refusal to acknowledge the results of the 2020 election.

What’s going on now: In a 54-46 vote, the US Senate confirmed Pam Bondi as Attorney General, with all Republicans and one Democrat, Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania, voting in favor of her nomination. Attorney General Bondi takes over the Justice Department at a time of significant upheaval. During her confirmation hearing, she pledged to restore confidence in the department, end what she called the “partisan weaponization” of the DOJ, and ensure that law enforcement operates without political bias. She also stated that, under her leadership, the Justice Department would maintain its independence and uphold legal standards without outside influence.
Despite this, Democrats remain deeply skeptical, arguing that Bondi’s close ties to Trump and past involvement in his 2020 election challenges raise serious concerns about her impartiality. Many fear she will turn the DOJ into a political tool for the president, especially in light of the recent firing of prosecutors involved in Trump-related cases. During her confirmation hearing, Attorney General Bondi refused to answer key questions during her hearing, including whether she would appoint a special counsel if Trump faced legal trouble or investigate former special counsel Jack Smith.
Trump reacts: In a statement, President Trump said, “Congratulations to our wonderful and very talented United States Attorney General, Pam Bondi, who gets sworn in today amid tremendous support, and the respect of ALL! I know Pam well, it was an honor to appoint her, and my prediction is that she will go down as one of the best and most consequential Attorney Generals in the history of our Country. Congratulations Pam, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
