A former hospital worker has been arrested after three infants in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) were discovered with unexplained fractures.
What’s the deal: According to authorities, Erin Elizabeth Ann Strotman, a 26-year-old former employee of Henrico Doctors’ Hospital in Virginia, has been charged with malicious wounding and felony child abuse. The charges stem from an incident in late 2024, where three infants in the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) were discovered to have unexplained fractures. These injuries prompted an extensive investigation involving law enforcement, hospital administrators, and regulatory agencies. Strotman’s arrest followed the review of dozens of surveillance videos from the NICU and other investigative efforts.

Authorities noted a troubling pattern, linking the 2024 incidents to similar cases from the summer of 2023 when four babies in the same NICU suffered unexplained fractures. At the time, a Child Protective Services (CPS) investigation concluded that the injuries were caused by physical abuse by a hospital employee, though no individual was identified. The current investigation is revisiting those earlier cases as part of a broader inquiry, with police and hospital officials collaborating to uncover how such incidents occurred and ensure accountability.
In a brief statement, Henrico Doctors’ Hospital said, “We have been assisting law enforcement in their ongoing investigation and will continue to do so. We are both shocked and saddened by this development in the investigation and are focused on continuing to care for our patients and providing support to our colleagues who have been deeply and personally impacted by this investigation. We are grateful to those colleagues, who have dedicated their professional lives to the care and safety of our patients, as well as to law enforcement and the other agencies who have worked aggressively and tirelessly with us on this investigation. For more than 30 years, the NICU at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital has provided necessary and life-saving care to babies in central Virginia and we remain focused on ensuring the availability of that care in our community.”
