Mexico’s newly elected president has announced that her country is prepared for potential mass deportations from the United States.

Let’s bring you up to speed: President-Elect Donald Trump has vowed to carry out the largest immigration crackdown in US history, promising mass deportations of undocumented migrants and signaling the potential involvement of the US military to enforce these measures. Trump’s running mate, JD Vance, estimated that the operation could remove up to one million people annually, highlighting the scale and speed of the initiative. Reports suggest Trump is exploring broad measures to achieve this goal, including leveraging federal agencies, deploying diplomatic resources, and intensifying border security to prevent further unauthorized entry.

What the President of Mexico is saying: During a press conference, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum addressed concerns over President-elect Donald Trump’s proposed mass deportation plan, noting she was prepared to deal with it. She said, “We will receive Mexicans and we have a plan for it, but before that, we will work to demonstrate that they do not have to deport our compatriots who are on the other side of the border. On the contrary, they even benefit the economy of the United States. We don’t agree that migrants should be treated as criminals.”

This development comes as a caravan in southern Mexico, with roughly 1,500 migrants, makes its way toward the United States ahead of Trump’s election. As of Wednesday, the caravan was passing through Tapachula.

In an interview with AP, one of the migrants, Yotzeli Peña of Venezuela, said, “It is going to be more difficult; that’s why we are going in hopes of getting an appointment quicker so we are able to cross before he (Trump) takes office. That would be easier.”
