President-elect Donald Trump has announced the nomination of Chris Wright, a fracking industry CEO, to lead the Department of Energy.
What’s the deal: Wright, the CEO of Liberty Energy, a Denver-based company specializing in hydraulic fracturing and oilfield services, has been a central figure in the American shale revolution that transformed global energy markets. An engineering graduate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Wright has experience across multiple energy sectors, including nuclear, solar, geothermal, and oil and gas. In addition to leading Liberty Energy, he serves on the board of Oklo, a company developing advanced nuclear reactor technologies, and has been a vocal proponent of US energy independence.
Digging into his new role: As Energy Secretary, Wright will oversee various responsibilities, including managing the US nuclear weapons program, regulating energy production and exports, and shaping the nation’s energy strategy. His priorities are expected to align with President-elect Trump’s agenda to increase fossil fuel production, roll back climate-focused regulations, and increase US energy independence.
Wright will also play a key role in dismantling Biden-era programs aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, including initiatives funded by the Inflation Reduction Act that support renewable energy technologies and carbon capture efforts.
What Trump is saying: In a statement, President-elect Donald Trump called Wright a “key leader” who will drive “innovation” and “cut red tape.”
