The United States has arrested and charged an employee of the CIA for allegedly leaking highly classified documents detailing Israel’s military preparations for a potential strike on Iran.

Let’s bring you up to speed: Last month, leaked documents were posted on a pro-Iranian Telegram account that revealed highly classified US intelligence about Israel’s preparations for a potential military strike against Iran following an Iranian missile attack on October 1. These top-secret documents, intended only for the US and its ‘Five Eyes’ allies, revealed Israel’s movement of munitions and air force exercises involving air-to-surface missiles, both seen as preparations for the strike. The documents also suggested that Israel may possess nuclear weapons, a capability Israel has never publicly confirmed.

What’s going on now: According to court documents, Asif William Rahman, a CIA employee with top-secret security clearance, was arrested by FBI agents in Cambodia and transported to the US territory of Guam to face federal charges. Rahman is accused of willfully transmitting classified national defense information, including sensitive intelligence about Israel’s military planning and potential strike preparations against Iran.

The Department of Justice indicted Rahman on two counts of unlawful retention and transmission of national defense materials, which, if convicted, could result in significant prison time.

The CIA has not commented on the news, and a Justice Department spokeswoman declined to comment on the case.
