The FBI has confirmed that they are investigating a leak of classified US intelligence documents detailing potential Israeli plans for a retaliatory strike against Iran.

Let’s bring you up to speed: Over the weekend, leaked documents were posted on a pro-Iranian Telegram account, revealing highly classified US intelligence about Israel’s preparations for a potential military strike against Iran following an Iranian missile attack on October 1. These top-secret documents, intended only for the US and its ‘Five Eyes’ allies, revealed Israel’s movement of munitions and air force exercises involving air-to-surface missiles, both seen as preparations for the strike. The documents also suggested that Israel may possess nuclear weapons, a capability Israel has never publicly confirmed.

What the FBI is saying: In a statement, the FBI said they were “investigating the alleged leak of classified documents and working closely with our partners in the Department of Defense and Intelligence Community. As this is an ongoing investigation, we have no further comment.”

A couple of different views:
Did the US leak it?: Some analysts speculate that the United States may have deliberately leaked classified documents detailing Israel’s potential retaliatory strike on Iran as a strategic move to delay or prevent the attack. Those who are speculating on this theory argue that by exposing sensitive military plans, the US could be aiming to de-escalate regional tensions, give diplomacy a chance, or dissuade Israel from launching a preemptive strike that might trigger a broader conflict.

Was it a hack?: Some have speculated that the leak could have been from a cyberattack or hacking incident targeting US intelligence systems. Given the sensitive nature of the information, including satellite imagery and strategic analysis from agencies like the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, foreign actors, possibly linked to Iran or other adversaries, could have gained unauthorized access to these files.

Did a Five Eyes member leak it? Some have speculated that a member of the Five Eyes alliance, which includes Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom, could have leaked this intelligence that was shared by the US.

What the White House is saying: Yesterday, White House National Security Spokesman John Kirby said the intelligence community was working to “determine the manner in which they did become public.” He added, “At this point, we’ll let the investigation pursue its logical course there. We’re deeply concerned, and the president remains deeply concerned, about any leakage of classified information into the public domain. That is not supposed to happen, and it’s unacceptable when it does.”
