The United States has carried out a series of airstrikes against Iranian-backed forces in Syria and Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen.
What’s the deal in Syria: In an announcement, US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that the US military had conducted airstrikes against Iranian-aligned targets in Syria following recent attacks on American forces stationed there. The strikes targeted nine specific locations and were intended to disrupt the operational capabilities of Iranian-backed groups in the region. CENTCOM’s commander, General Michael Erik Kurilla, stated that this action sent a “clear” message that the US would not tolerate attacks on its personnel and coalition partners.
What’s the deal in Yemen: The United States also confirmed that it recently conducted airstrikes on Houthi-controlled weapons storage facilities in Yemen, specifically targeting locations believed to hold advanced conventional weapons used in attacks against civilian and military vessels in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
A US defense official stated that these strikes were intended to reduce the Houthi forces’ ability to threaten international waters following a series of missile and drone attacks by the Iran-backed group, which has intensified its actions in response to Israel’s ongoing war in Gaza.
