A 13-year-old boy has been arrested after attempting to enter a school with a replica firearm, sparking a district wide lockdown.
What’s the deal: According to police, a 13-year-old boy attempted to enter Roosevelt Elementary School in Kenosha, Wisconsin, on Thursday morning, carrying a backpack and a black duffel bag. When he tried to access the school through a side entrance, staff members approached him, causing him to flee on foot. The incident prompted a “secure hold” lockdown across all Kenosha Unified School District schools. The suspect was eventually apprehended at his home after surrendering to authorities.
Though initially believed to be carrying a real firearm, a search of his home later revealed only replica airsoft guns, including handguns and a rifle. Police later discovered that the boy had previously researched school shootings online and recorded a video where he appeared to wield a rifle while practicing room-entry techniques.
Police react: In a statement, the Kenosha Police Department said, “Incidents like these remind us that our community is not exempt. We need to remain vigilant and be willing to say something if we see something. While yesterday’s incident did not result in unimaginable tragedy, it still had a powerful effect on many of us.”
They added, “We now know that the suspect’s intentions were displayed and shared with others well before the event unfolded and if reported earlier, we may have been able to intervene and provide resources that would have allowed us to avoid such an impactful incident in our community.”
