Green Party candidate Jill Stein has criticized the Democratic Party for losing credibility and is calling on the party’s leadership to resign.
Before you read: Jill Stein is an American physician, activist, and politician best known for her involvement with the Green Party, through which she has run for president three times: in 2012, 2016, and 2024. As a candidate, Stein has focused on progressive issues, advocating for environmental reform, social justice, and economic equality. Throughout her political career, she has voiced opposition to corporate influence in politics.
What’s the deal: During an interview with Newsweek, Stein said, “The Democrats have really lost credibility. They are seen as bought and paid for … Their primaries are rigged, power is top down. The Democrats betrayed their base. I don’t see them coming back. The economic disparities are real. People are tired of the Democrats. They need to move over and allow a proper opposition.”
Stein’s comments to Newsweek echoed her public statement following Trump’s victory, in which she blamed the Democratic party. She said, “The Democrats have no one but themselves to blame for losing to Trump again, after their decades of failures and betrayals that paved the way for Trump’s rise in the first place. From their unconditional support for the endless war machine and genocide in Gaza, to their subservience to Wall Street, to their indifference to human rights, to their reckless acceleration of the fossil fuel pollution driving climate collapse, to their assault on democracy – on all these issues and many more the Democratic Party has betrayed the trust of the people.”
She added, “This election removes any remaining doubt that the Democratic Party has utterly failed the people it claims to represent, and that we need a genuine opposition party for people, planet, and peace.”
The two-party system: In addition to criticizing the Democratic Party, Dr. Stein also went after the two-party system, saying, “Once again the two-party system has delivered a disastrous result for the American people. Now we must continue the uprising for people-powered politics and demand the world we deserve – which will never be delivered by the twin parties of war and Wall Street.”
