Another high-ranking New York City official has resigned as the federal investigation into Mayor Eric Adams’ administration intensifies.
Let’s bring you up to speed: Last month, federal prosecutors charged New York City Mayor Eric Adams, accusing him of accepting illegal campaign contributions and bribes from foreign nationals in exchange for political favors. The indictment claims Adams and his administration were part of a larger scheme to funnel illicit funds into his campaign, sparking multiple related investigations. Federal agents have seized devices from several top officials in his administration, further widening the inquiry. Despite increasing legal pressure, Adams has pleaded not guilty and maintains his innocence.
What happened today: Philip Banks, New York City’s Deputy Mayor for Public Safety, has resigned from his position. In an interview, Mayor Adams said Banks “wants to transition to some other things” and “doesn’t want this to be a constant burden on the work that we’re doing in the city.” He added, “I wish my good friend well.”
