Ukraine has confirmed that they assassinated a high-level official at the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine.

What’s the deal: According to Ukraine’s military intelligence agency (GUR), Andriy Korotky, the head of security at the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, was killed in a car bomb attack. The explosion occurred when an improvised explosive device placed under his car detonated as he was leaving his home. Despite being taken to the hospital, Korotky died from his injuries.

What Ukraine is saying: In a brief statement, the GUR said that Korotky was a “war criminal.” They accused him of voluntarily cooperating with Russia and providing information about pro-Ukrainian employees at the plant. They also said that Korotky participated in the mistreatment of staff loyal to Ukraine.

What Russia is saying: In a brief statement, Yury Chernichuk, a Russian-installed official at the nuclear power plant, said, “Attacking the staff members responsible for the security of a nuclear facility is a reckless step beyond any bounds.” In addition, Russia’s Investigative Committee confirmed that they were opening a criminal investigation into the assassination of Korotky.

More on the power plant: The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, Europe’s largest, has been under Russian control since the beginning of the 2022 invasion. After seizing the facility, Russia has reportedly forced Ukrainian staff to continue working there under difficult and “coercive” conditions. Ukrainian officials have claimed that plant employees who remain are subjected to surveillance, harassment, and intimidation by Russian authorities. Some staff have also been jailed, interrogated, and punished for suspected pro-Ukrainian sentiments or refusing to cooperate with Russian-installed leadership.
