The US military conducted air and naval strikes against more than a dozen Houthi targets in Yemen.
What’s the deal: The US military has launched a series of air and naval strikes against Houthi targets in Yemen, focusing on weapons systems, bases, and other equipment in significant areas like Hodeida and Sanna. At present, the number of casualties from the strikes is unknown.
The strikes follow more than a half dozen ballistic missiles, anti-ship cruise missiles, and two drones that were fired toward three US warships traveling through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait last week. The attack was intercepted by US Navy destroyers, preventing any damage to the vessels. Despite this, the Houthis claimed that their missiles “hit” their targets, a claim the US denies.
This comes as the Houthis have been targeting vessels in the Red Sea as part of their declared effort to disrupt maritime traffic linked to Israel and the United States in retaliation for Israel’s military campaign against Hamas in Gaza. Since the onset of the Israel-Hamas war, the group claims these attacks are meant to pressure Israel and its allies by hitting ships they perceive as being connected to the conflict. However, many of the vessels targeted have little or no connection to Israel or the ongoing war, as the Houthis’ attacks have affected a broad range of commercial ships.
