NATO has increased surveillance along Romania’s border with Ukraine.

What’s the deal: According to US Army Gen. Christopher Cavoli, who also serves as NATO’s supreme allied commander, the alliance will increase the number of surveillance flights due to a notable increase in Russian military activities and a recent incident where a Russian drone briefly crossed into Romanian airspace.

What to expect: The increase in surveillance flights will mean an increase in NATO deployment of AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control System) aircraft, known as “eye in the skies.” These planes are equipped with advanced radar systems capable of detecting aircraft up to 250 miles away, providing real-time tracking and monitoring of activities in Ukrainian and neighboring airspaces.

What NATO said: In a statement, NATO said the move would “strengthen Romania’s ability to respond to the increased air activity in the vicinity of its border.” They added that the move is “defensive” and would “take place solely over Alliance territory.”
