South Korea has unveiled some of the country’s most advanced military equipment, including one of the most powerful non-nuclear ballistic missiles in the world.
Let’s bring you up to speed: Yesterday, a military parade in Seoul commemorating South Korea’s Armed Forces Day showcased the nation’s military strength and celebrated the 76th anniversary of the military’s founding. The event featured around 5,000 South Korean troops.

New “toys” revealed: During the parade, South Korea’s military rolled out the Hyunmoo-5 ballistic missile, a new advanced weapon system designed for retaliatory strikes against North Korea. This missile is capable of carrying a warhead weighing over 8 tons, making it one of the most powerful in the world. The missile’s specialized transporter erector launcher allows it to have greater mobility because its wheels can turn and move diagonally to navigate challenging terrain, making it more adaptable in diverse combat environments.
South Korean president speaks: While speaking at the parade, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol said, “When the North Korean communists started the Korean War … our military fought bravely and shed blood to protect the free [South Korea]. Even now, they stand firm against the constant threats and provocations from North Korea, carrying out the important mission of safeguarding the nation and its people.” Yoon also said he was committed to “protecting our country and its people with thoroughness and precision.”
Warning to North Korea: President Yoon noted that if North Korea, which often threatens to strike South Korea with nuclear weapons, were to ever “attempt” using a nuclear weapon against South Korea, the North would “face the resolute and overwhelming response of our military and the [US-South Korea military] alliance.” He added, “That day will be the end of the North Korean regime.”
North Korea comments: North Korean Vice Defense Minister Kim Kang downplayed the new military equipment and parade following the parade, calling it a “bluffing military demonstration.”
