New York Police Commissioner Edward Caban resigned after the FBI seized his devices in connection with an ongoing federal investigation.
Let’s bring you up to speed: Earlier this month, news broke that the FBI had seized devices from New York Police Commissioner Edward Caban and top officials in Mayor Eric Adams’ administration as part of a federal investigation led by the US Attorney’s Office in Manhattan. The exact focus of the probe remains unclear, but it involves Caban, First Deputy Mayor Sheena Wright, Deputy Mayor for Public Safety Philip Banks, and former NYPD official Timothy Pearson.
What’s going on now: In an announcement, New York City mayor Eric Adams said, “A short time ago I accepted the resignation of the NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban. He concluded that this is the best decision at this time. I respect his decision and I wish him well.” The Mayor also noted that under Caban’s leadership, crime in New York City dropped.
More on investigations into the Mayor: Mayor Eric Adams has faced multiple federal investigations, mostly tied to his 2021 mayoral campaign. Earlier this year, the FBI raided his home as part of a corruption probe led by the US Attorney’s Office in Brooklyn. The investigation focuses on claims that his campaign worked with the Turkish government to receive illegal foreign donations. In another incident, federal agents seized Adams’ phones and iPad as he left an event in Manhattan. Over the summer, subpoenas were issued to both his campaign and City Hall. He has denied any wrongdoing.
