Russia launched a large-scale missile and drone attack on Ukraine yesterday, targeting energy infrastructure across the country in one of the most significant attacks since the beginning of the war.
What’s the deal: According to Ukrainian officials, Russia launched over 100 missiles and approximately 100 “Shahed” drones, targeting critical energy infrastructure across Ukraine. The attacks caused widespread power outages in Kyiv, Dnipro, and Odesa, leading to significant damage, forced emergency power cuts, and disruptions to civilian life. Authorities reported at least seven deaths and dozens of injuries.
What Russia is saying: Russia claimed the missile and drone strikes targeted critical energy infrastructure and transportation networks supporting Ukraine’s military. The Russian Defense Ministry stated that long-range precision air- and sea-based weapons, along with strike drones, were used to hit facilities tied to Ukraine’s military-industrial complex.
Ukrainian officials react: In a statement, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said, “Each of these strikes repeatedly reminds us of the critical need for long-range capabilities—to give our Defense Forces sufficient long-range weapons to destroy the terrorists precisely at the locations from which they launch their attacks. This is the optimal anti-terrorist tactic that every one of our partners, from whom we expect decisions regarding our long-range capabilities, would rightfully employ and certainly use to protect themselves.”
Digging Deeper: The massive Russian missile and drone attack on Ukraine was a response to Ukraine’s recent large-scale offensive against Russian territory, which included strikes on airbases, infrastructure, and railways. In recent weeks, Ukraine has intensified efforts to disrupt Russian military activities by targeting key logistical hubs and transportation networks.
