The Park Fire in California, which has expanded to over 350,000 acres, is currently 12% contained after four days of intense firefighting efforts. The blaze is believed to have been ignited by a man with a flaming vehicle in Chico and has worsened due to extreme heat, dryness, and strong winds.

What’s the deal: According to California officials, the fire has rapidly expanded to over 350,000 acres, destroying 134 structures as it spreads from Butte to Tehama County. Thousands of firefighters are working to control the blaze, which is roughly 12% contained after four days of intense efforts.

How the fire allegedly started: The fire is believed to have been ignited by 37-year-old John Stout, who reportedly pushed a burning vehicle into a dry brush-filled gully in Chico, California. Stout was arrested at his home following a standoff with law enforcement and now faces multiple charges, including aggravated arson.

Government response: California Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency for Butte, Tehama, and Plumas counties to facilitate aid and support for those impacted by the fire. Additionally, Newsom’s office has secured a FEMA grant to aid in firefighting efforts.

Biden briefed: The White House said in a statement, “The President has been briefed on the Park Fire in Northern California. In addition to federal assets already deployed, the President has directed his team to do everything possible to support ongoing fire suppression efforts.”
