Senator Elizabeth Warren has claimed that the Supreme Court is actively “undermining democracy” and has called on lawmakers to take steps to “rein in” the Court’s influence.
What Senator Warren said: While appearing on CNN, Senator Warren said, “Right now, we have a Supreme Court that has basically jumped the guardrails and is out there giving power to the president, saying that the president can commit any act that the president wants, saying that Congress cannot authorize agencies to act. So we’ve got a Supreme Court that is actively undermining our democracy.”

Digging Deeper: Senator Warren’s remarks follow President Biden’s pledge to prioritize Supreme Court reforms during the final six months of his presidency. In his Oval Office address, President Biden stated, “In the next six months, I’ll be focused on doing my job as president… And I’m going to call for Supreme Court reform, because this is critical to our democracy.” His proposed reforms include implementing term limits for justices and establishing a new “code of ethics.”
Why now?: The push for Supreme Court reform follows a recent ruling concerning Donald Trump’s criminal cases. The Court determined that a sitting president has certain immunity from prosecution, a decision critics argue could potentially enable “unchecked” presidential misconduct. The courts ruling will potentially derail some of the criminal cases against Trump.
