Vice President Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign has raised $200 million in a single week and recruited 170,000 new volunteers.
What’s the deal: The campaign reported raising $200 million in just one week, with 66% of the donations coming from first-time contributors in the 2024 election cycle. Small-dollar donations were pivotal, with 888,000 grassroots supporters contributing to the effort.
Campaign statement: Michael Tyler, the campaign’s communications director, said, “Vice President Harris has been a candidate for less than a week, but she’s already coalesced the entire Democratic Party around her campaign and the organic, grassroots enthusiasm is producing results. The momentum and energy for Vice President Harris is real — and so are the fundamentals of this race: this election will be very close and decided by a small number of voters in just a few states.”
Picking a running mate: Alongside her fundraising achievements, Harris has streamlined her list of potential vice-presidential candidates. At the forefront are Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and Arizona Senator Mark Kelly. Shapiro, from a key battleground state, is recognized for his effective leadership, while Kelly, a former astronaut and gun control advocate, brings notable experience and appeal. North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper and Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear are also under consideration.
