Congressman Adam Schiff (D-CA) has reportedly told Democratic Party donors that Joe Biden remaining at the top of the ticket for November elections would jeopardize the party’s hold on the presidency and senate.

According to a New York Times report, Schiff expressed his concerns about Biden’s viability as the Democratic nominee during a fundraiser in East Hampton, New York. “I think if he is our nominee, I think we lose,” Schiff stated, according to a transcription of a recording of the event. He added, “And we may very well lose the Senate and our chance to take back the House.”

The Times noted that at least one donor left the event feeling disheartened, now believing that Biden’s chances of winning are slim and suggesting a focus on down-ballot candidates to salvage some electoral success. Although 19 House Democrats and one senator have publicly called for Biden to withdraw from the race, Schiff has not joined them.

Biden’s campaign responded to the Times, arguing that he “maintained strong support from members of Congress.” In addition, President Biden has vowed to stay in the race, arguing that he is the best option to defeat Trump.

Despite Biden’s stance, internal party discord continues. Earlier today, ABC reported that a letter was circulating among members of Congress that demanded the Democratic National Committee (DNC) halt plans for a virtual roll call to confirm the presidential nominee before next month’s convention in Chicago.
