The White House has officially pushed back on a New York Times article that claimed President Biden expressed doubts about his ability to save his candidacy following his debate performance last week.

On Wednesday, the White House and Biden’s reelection campaign rejected the New York Times report. In a statement, the White House said, “That claim is absolutely false. If the New York Times had provided us with more than 7 minutes to comment, we would have told them so.” In addition, the Biden campaign said, “The President is in this race to win it. He is the Democratic nominee.”

This comes after the New York Times quoted an anonymous official close to President Biden, who acknowledged he “may not be able to salvage his candidacy if he cannot convince the public in the coming days that he is up for the job.” The anonymous source also said that President Biden understood how crucial his upcoming appearances were, including a sitdown interview with ABC News and two upcoming campaign stops.

The report from The New York Times has added to the turbulence within Biden’s campaign, which has been under scrutiny following his performance in the recent debate against former President Trump. Biden’s hesitant and wandering responses during the debate have sparked concerns within the Democratic Party, with some questioning his ability to lead the 2024 race.

In an effort to quell the growing panic among supporters and donors, the campaign has issued several memos highlighting close polling numbers against Trump and reiterating their strategy to secure a victory. Despite this, recent polls by realclearpolitics.com show Trump leading in seven of the nine latest polls related to the election.
